MD Anderson is expanding its proton therapy facility in Houston. The new 80,000 SF facility will be located on an open lot adjacent to the existing proton treatment building. A pedestrian bridge will link the new facility with the existing center, creating the largest proton center in the world and bolstering MD Anderson’s reputation as a world leader in cancer treatment.
The new facility will accommodate the addition of new staff, the transfer of existing staff to the new center, and a repurposing of the current facility to ensure both centers are fully utilized. Using Hitachi equipment, proton treatment will consist of a synchrotron and four full-size gantries, two of which will be larger to accommodate CT on rails within the room. The pre-treatment layout is both logical and modular to facilitate interaction between staff and patients.
