The Proton Institute of New York (PINY)
New York City, New York
The task was to study multiple sites and configurations in New York City for the development of the first proton center in the state of New York. At the onset of the project, the team supported the client in their competition for the only Certificate of Need to be granted in New York. Throughout the lengthy CON process, we were highly engaged to provide data and analyses related to the architectural, engineering, shielding, site optimization and technology design.
The program for the new Proton Center was 135,000 SF built on an urban site highly constrained by surrounding context. The Center design contained three gantries, one fixed beam, one eye chair, and one research room.
The design of the NY Proton Center utilized a cyclotron treatment system creating a world class facility to provide proton radiation oncology treatment for patients in a healing environment. This environment promotes a sense of well-being and comfort for patients with a focus on the use of natural materials and the combination of artificial and natural light. A well-organized and efficient layout allows doctor and technicians to work effectively to promote better outcomes for each patient.
