The Pet and Proton Therapy Center of Oman, Royal Hospital, Muscat, Oman
The PET and Proton Therapy Center of Oman will bring the most advanced technology to fight Cancer to Oman with broad regional outreach in the Middle East. The new 110,000 SF facility is comprised of 2 separate buildings located on a site at the entrance of the German University of Technology in Oman. With proton equipment being provided by Sumitomo, the 80,000 SF program is organized around 2 proton gantries and 2 photon gantries at the core of the building. All public amenities including waiting rooms, children’s play room, café, access to counselors and financial advisors, VIP rooms and prayer rooms are located at ground level, facing west behind the elegant stone-laced west facade. The Imaging Center is organized on two levels. The central part of the ground level is occupied by a radiopharmaceutical production facility with a medical cyclotron. The imaging suite is outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment (2 PET/CT, 1 MRI, mammography imaging) that allows it to provide the best medical services while creating synergy with the adjacent Cancer Treatment Center.
Between the two buildings, a 100-seat auditorium is set on an outdoor pedestrian plaza finished in limestone and ornamented with palm trees and fountains. A pedestrian bridge links the plaza to the other bank of the wadi where accommodation and services will be provided to patients and staff.
The synergy between these two buildings will create a world class facility and bring unprecedented technology in the Middle East to fight cancer. The architecture of the facility will blend the rich tradition of Arabic architecture with contemporary means of construction to create an environment that promotes a sense of well-being, comfort and healing for the patients. Natural materials, well-crafted details and the integration of gardens and fountains within the facility will strengthen the design of this world-class Imaging & Cancer.
