Memorial Sloan Kettering

New York, New York

Sites in New York City for the development of the first proton center in the state of New York. At the onset of the project, VOA supported the client in obtaining a Certificate of Need in New York. Throughout the lengthy process, VOA was highly engaged to provide data and analyses related to the architectural, engineering, shielding, and technology design.

The Proton Center will be a new 3-story, 135,000 SF facility built on a 49,360 SF constrained urban site located in uptown Manhattan. The Center will contain three gantries, one fixed beam, one eye chair, and one research room, hemmed in between two existing buildings. Due to the lack of additional space necessary for staging of materials and equipment, the Owner has entered into an agreement with adjacent property owner to provide staging space for construction and installation.

The design of the NY Proton Center, which will utilize a cyclotron treatment system, will create a world class facility, providing proton radiation oncology treatment for patients in a healing environment. This environment promotes a sense of well-being and comfort for patients through the use of natural materials and the combination of artificial and natural light. A well-organized and efficient layout allows the doctors and technicians to work effectively, increasing throughput and promoting better outcomes for each patient.
