It was closed in 1995 and in 2014 it was completely renovated and expanded to recover its original condition and reposition it as a 5 Star hotel operated by Gran Melia Hotels. The program for the renovation was to redesign and update its facilities, increase operational efficiency and enhance the spirit and artistry of the original design.
The program of renovation includes 413 guestrooms distributed along its thirty 33 story cylindrical tower with unsurpassed views of São Conrado Beach and a totally renewed Convention Center whose original amphitheater will be replaced by several high ceiling convention and meeting rooms capable of conducting several events at the same time. A new addition to augment the current facilities will be built on top of the convention component to provide 257 one and two- bedroom apartments distributed in two thirteen story towers.
