Emory Proton Therapy Center at the

Winship Cancer Center

The Emory University Proton Therapy Center (EUPTC) is a new 120,000 SF facility expected to treat approximately 2,200 cancer patients a year. EUPTC, located in mid-town Atlanta at the Emory University Hospital campus, is being built in partnership with Advanced Particle Therapy, LLC (APT) of San Diego, CA. Situated on a 2.39-acre urban site in the mid-town business district of Atlanta, the challenge was to meet the Owner’s program requirements on a constrained urban site within a neighborhood overlay district which required various amenities and uses to be included within the development of the site. The design proposed is a state-of-the-art proton center consisting of five gantries, 200-car parking structure, and creating 20,000 SF of retail space along an active pedestrian street. A previous existing building was demolished to clear the site, exposing the raw edge of a structured parking garage to which the new center is built up against. Due to the urban location, existing buildings and utility locations, the team engaged with the CM early in design development to pre-plan phasing and staging strategies for materials and equipment installation.

The new Center provides state of the art proton radiation oncology treatments for patients in an environment that is safe, friendly and complementary to the campus community. It will further establish Atlanta, Emory University and Winship Cancer Institute as centers for biomedical innovation and for advanced cancer care. In addition, researchers at EUPTC will collaborate with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Georgia Tech in continued studies on proton beam therapy. The EUPTC was a new client/relationship with APT and Emory University, and VOA quickly developed a strong rapport with the institution and user groups to successfully carry out this flagship project for Atlanta.
